WindLight: is it going to destroy the SL experience?
http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2007/05/so_the_windligh.html
Interesting, if scary article on the implications of the Wind Light system in Second Life. Should we be concerned that it is "coming soon"?

Buffys (actual) House build
I'm going to be doing a build of this house for the SIM. After all, it's been the site of many exciting episodes, and will be a fun visit for vamps and slayers alike. The slanting roof is the characteristic part I suppose; and being european, I'm really not used to these American-style town houses, but I'll just have to try my best. Maybe I'll use it as a model for building plots on the SIM too.

The Bronze, Preview Night at Sunnydale-SL
Well, despite Jude and I being stressed out of our minds towards the end, the party went off more-or-less hitch free.
Heather Martynov DJ'ed all night as Alexei Beaumont was not able to make it - so we had banging electro-clash and electronica all night to keep everyone happy. We had massive amounts of visitors from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sunnydale Vampires, and the Therapists plus some extras which really made the whole party go off with a bang. We'll be shooting for the opening at the end of November now, with me really focusing completely on the build and functionality of the SIM. Exciting stuff indeed.
From now on the Bronze stream will be http://80.237.175.60:5060 so you can tune in wherever you are, either in world or out. I'll be posting up pictures from the party soon. Myst

Second Life Island settings
Yes; at some point us island owners have to get down to the nitty-gritty of administering the island. It's like setting up the playing field, and is important to get right it seems. Any changed you make here are big, and impact on the whole island so are pretty important. There is a good Second Life Wiki article on it all here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Private_Island

Japanese Researchers Develop Thought-Control System for SL Avatar
A research team led by professor Jun’ichi Ushiba of the Keio University Biomedical Engineering Laboratory has developed a BCI system that lets the user walk an avatar through the streets of Second Life while relying solely on the power of thought. This could be the beginnings of a system by which not only can you control your SL Avatar, but ALSO be immersed inside SL via an interface that feeds 3D graphics and 3D sound directly into your visual and auditory cortex… Sound familiar?

Letters whilst waiting for an island
X,Y: (1060, 973) That's the grid referenceto the new Sunnydale-SL island. I am waiting excitedly to start moving the building work from the test parcel over to it. And waiting. And waiting. As you will have seen from my previous post it's now the 5th day since I ordered the island and yesterday I finally received a reply from my support ticket, from Dee Linden which neatly states:
Solution
Solved: (10/25/2007 9:09 AM PDT)
Should be delivered to you later today or tomorrow =)
Dee.
Right then! I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that that really is the case. As anybody who is a member of the Buffy group will know, we're planning a pre-launch party next saturday at The Bronze (friday 3rd of November). We were planning it to coincide with Halloween next wednesday, but the SL grid will be down for maintainance just before then and it's just too big a risk to take to count on it being back up in time.
We have a owner/manager of the Bronze who will be taking it over from saturday, and we'll announce that at the party. Immediately after we will close the island for access whilst working on the build, but hope to have the official, full opening very, very soon after that.

Support at Linden Labs
So I finally got an answer from Second Life support about the island I just paid 1680$ for. Three days was a long time to wait for a response, and in my day job that wouldn't be considered acceptable at all. Linden Labs have to be a little careful with that; basically support means everything for a service company on the net. Companies live and die based on that fact alone. I'll keep you posted as to how it improves. Or not.
Interesting article on "Is Second Life sustainable"
I bloody hope so after I just spent 1600$ on an island!!

Mysteryn11 Building tip of the week:)
Show your building axis - This is really useful:
Trigger client menu first (ctrl+alt+d), then select
rendering-> axes
Voila!
(Plus an unrelated but fun article on Torley's top Client+Server debug options:'http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden/Debug_Settings

Path cuts

Here are some nice little tips (basic ones mind) on prims and what they do. I've been working with cutting paths and this helped.

Building in SL
Here's some resources I found recently:

These are really great scripting bits and pieces (like adding a link to an object etc.)

My second life: an introduction.
About six months ago I logged in to Second Life for the first time. I am not going into a long-winded definition of what SL is as many others have defined it much better than I (not least Linden Labs themselves - http://secondlife.com/whatis/). I had heard about it from a friend of mine, and it sounded fascinating, but I'd never actually gotten around to joining. Several years ago I had been part of another virtual world called Cybertown, which although extremely crude by SL's standards was ground-breaking at the time. I fell in love instantly. This was something that I had been looking for ever since I picked up my first William Gibson book. It is, in fact pretty much defined in the Gibson book "Idoru" http://www.williamgibsonbooks.com/books/idoru.asp. The place is both so large, and so detailed that the concept of the internet suddenly becomes clearer. It is like a three dimensional visualisation of the net superimposed on a model of our world. I signed up creating my Second Life name of mysteryn11 Vollmar. mysteryn11 is an alter-ego and avatar I have used on the internet since the early 90's and of which I may write about another time. This was my birthday. This blogg is my exploration of the grid, my initiation into the society of Second Life, and my thoughts and feelings on what happens there.
